Opera is the most expensive of the performing arts because it encompasses all the performing arts. For our own Syracuse Opera productions, we engage the solo singers, conductor, stage director, choreographer, lighting, set and costume designers. We use the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Syracuse Opera Chorus, Upstate NY Ballet, and have all the theatrical elements found at Syracuse Stage – scenery, costumes, wigs, makeup, lighting and special effects. Behind the scenes we employ an army of people to create the magic seen on stage. Opera is the original multimedia art form.
We do all of this on a budget of $1 million, and we are operating in the black. Syracuse can be proud to have a healthy and artistically viable opera company when other Upstate cities such as Buffalo, Rochester and Albany do not. Thanks to the wonderful support that we have received from individuals, corporations, foundations and government entities over the past 30 years, we are poised to take the next big step in our development as the finest year-round opera company in Upstate New York.

The late Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium is paired in a double bill with Ruggiero Leoncavallo’s. Not your typical pairing, but the two share a similar atmosphere. In The Medium, we have the play acting of a séance, in Pagliacci the play acting of a com media troupe. The common link between the two operas is a protagonist who goes over the edge of sanity and commits murder. The Medium was written in 1946 and ran for 211 performances on Broadway in 1947. It was paired with Menotti’s The Telephone. As Bernard Holland of The New York Times wrote in Mr. Menotti’s obituary on February 1, 2007, “‘The Medium’ was a compendium of the Menotti style — delicate orchestration, lyric writing and often a melodramatic theatricality.” At the time of its premiere, New York Times music critic Olin Downs wrote, "we have here the quality of opera. It is dramatic music, emphatic in action as well as feeling, and in essence song, which is what opera must be. No other American composer has shown the inborn talent that Mr. Menotti, an Italian by descent, unquestionably possesses for the lyric theater." |
