The Civic Opera House in its Opening Night splendor

As guests walk the red carpet and enter the Civic Opera House in its Opening Night splendor, they will find a foyer that is transformed with beautiful décor inspired by the performance. The evening will include delicious hors d'ouevres and desserts, with sparkling water and champagne available as well. The Opening Night performance will be Lyric's production of Jules Massenet's Manon, starring Natalie Dessay as Manon, Jonas Kaufmann as Des Grieux, Christopher Feigum as Lescaut, and David Cangelosi as Guillot.

The Opening Night Gala Benefit 2008 is sponsored by Aon Corporation.

Massenet's Manon Lyric Opera presentation is generously made possible by the Abbott Fund, an Anonymous Donor, Judson and Joyce Green, and Liz Stiffe
Those attending the Opening Night Gala performance are also invited to purchase tickets to the Opera Ball held at the Hilton Chicago, immediately following the performance. This black-tie affair gives opera lovers the opportunity to celebrate Opening Night with the stars of the show!

Attendees enter the Hilton and ascend the grand staircase to be greeted by the sound of heralding trumpets and welcomed by the Opening Night and Opera Ball chairmen, the Women’s Board president, and hostesses from the Women’s Board. The Grand March of the Stars begins the Opera Ball, followed by a delightful meal and guests dancing the night away to the Stu Hirsh Orchestra.

The defining event of the 20th century, the development of the Atomic Bomb, is the basis for this John Adams work. The symposium's distinguished panelists include composer John Adams; his librettist and director Peter Sellars; Gerald Finley, who portrays Robert Oppenheimer in the opera; Nobelist Norman Ramsey who worked with Oppenheimer at Los Alamos; Pulitzer Prize-winning Oppenheimer biographer Martin Sherwin; noted physicist and teacher Henry Frisch, whose parents worked on the Manhattan Project and who now is a keeper of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists' Doomsday Clock (the figurative representation of humanity's proximity to global catastrophe); and president and CEO of The Art Institute of Chicago, James Cuno. Join them for a fascinating look at both the opera and the incidents and characters that inspired it. A once-in-a-lifetime convergence of music, history, and scholarship, this not-to-be-missed symposium is an historic event in its own right!
