Manitoba Opera today announced that a contribution of $250,000 has been made by The Asper Foundation, Gail Asper & Michael Paterson, and Babs Asper towards the staging of the world premiere of the new opera, Transit of Venus, which will open the company's 35th season in November, 2007. This is the second unprecedented $250,000 gift received by Manitoba Opera for Transit of Venus, the largest single sum from private contributions ever received by the organization. James Richardson & Sons, Limited made the first quarter million dollar contribution
Manitoba Opera is excited to present Transit of Venus by librettist Maureen Hunter and composer Victor Davies in November 2007 in celebration of its 35th season, 2007/08.
This full-length, three-act opera with full orchestra will be the first opera commissioned for main-stage production in the history of the company. It will be sung in English with surtitles. There are three performances at the Manitoba Centennial Concert Hall scheduled for Saturday, November 24, Tuesday, November 27 and Friday, November 30.
Transit of Venus is based on the real-life expeditions of the 18th-century French astronomer, Guillaume le Gentil de la Galaisičre, who twice tried, unsuccessfully, to chart the transit of the planet Venus across the sun. As early as the 17th century, the transit was believed to be a way of determining accurately the distance between the earth and the sun.
The opera explores the question of achieving your potential or being with the people you love. It follows the play’s storyline and tells of Le Gentil’s passion for what he believes is his destiny (astronomy) and Celeste’s unconsummated love for him. He and Celeste are engaged, but his quest to chart the transit of Venus takes him far from home, first for six years and then for another five years. Believing Le Gentil to be dead, Celeste turns to his assistant, Demarais for comfort and ultimately the love she so longs for. When Le Gentil finally returns, he tries to explain that he realizes his destiny to be with her, but she has moved on with her life. In the end, Le Gentil has failed in both tracking his heavenly love (Venus) and his love here on Earth
Follow all the action. English translations are projected above the stage at every opera.

History
First founded in 1969 by a passionate group of Winnipeg Opera lovers, the Manitoba Opera presented its first production, a concert version of Verdi's IL TROVATORE in 1972.
Manitoba Opera's productions have featured the talents of great international singers as well as local artists such as Tracy Dahl, Phillip Ens and Heidi Klassen who have sung on stages around the world. The Manitoba Opera Chorus, under the direction of Tadeusz Biernacki, is hailed for their excellent singing and acting abilities. The company's Orpheus Recital, founded in 1994 has brought to the Centennial Centre's stage some of the world's greatest singers, Dame Kiri Ti Kanawa, Kathleen Battle, Frederica von Stade, Jerry Hadley and Samuel Ramey.
The strength of character of the Manitoba Opera comes from its ability to attract great international artists such as the Met's LEONA MITCHELL and La Scala's EDUARD TUMAGIAN and to highlight the best local talent, such as Tracy Dahl and Phillip Ens. The Manitoba Opera Chorus is supported by Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of internationally known conductors. Lavish sets and costumes bring the performances to life, while English surtitles, projected on an overhead screen, make foreign-language operas accessible and comprehensible to everyone.
The company works closely with the vibrant Winnipeg Arts community, employing the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Theatre Centre and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
The Manitoba Opera is supported, not only by individual and corporate donors, but also by The Canada Council, The Manitoba Arts Council, The City of Winnipeg and foundations such as The Winnipeg Foundation and The Thomas Sill Foundation.
