Kennet Opera - based in West Berkshire, England - was established in 1993 to bring easily accessible, enjoyable Grand Opera and concert song to the community of Newbury and its surrounding areas. By building links with colleges, professional musicians, tutors and other musical groups we hope to help promote participation and develop talent for future generations, while de-alienating these arts and developing a modern style which is enjoyable for the general public.
We perform one Grand Opera every year at The Corn Exchange, Newbury, sung in English. It is organised, supported and performed by our keen local members, who strive to produce high quality productions which are enjoyable for our varied audience. These operas are made possible by our dedicated and generous company members, and are brought to life by these members and the great skills of the professional Directors, Musical Directors and the upcoming opera talent we are fortunate enough to be associated with.
Throughout the year, alongside these grand productions, Kennet Opera take their music to the widest audience possible in concerts, in local festivals and with local schools and school-children.
Paul studied Conducting, Composition, Organ and Piano at Trinity College of Music and graduated with honours in 1996, also winning the Chappell Composition Prize, the Harold Clarke Prize for Accompaniment and the Rotary Club of St Marylebone Award for Musicianship.
As a conductor, Paul has performed extensively throughout the UK and abroad. Engagements have included Remix for The Baylis Programme at English National Opera, The Albatross, a new opera by Diana Burrell for Trinity College of Music, Iolanthe and Princess Ida for Imperial Opera, and Anything Goes and Guys & Dolls for University of London Opera. He is an award winning choral director and conducts Eastcote Choral Society, The Willis Singers and Exultate, one of London’s premiere chamber choirs.
Paul is a highly accomplished pianist and accompanist. He performs regularly with the tenor Stephen Brown in recitals across the UK and Europe and frequently appears as soloist in the concertos of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann with a number of leading orchestras. He has performed extensively for television and radio and has composed a number of soundtracks and incidental music for film and theatre.
Paul is musician in residence at Wycombe Abbey School and Organist and Director of Music at St Barnabas, Kensington. In April 2005, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Paul became Musical Director of Kennet Opera in April 2004.
The stage performers in each production typically come from the company's membership. We pride ourselves on the standard of performers within the company, and are lucky to be able to cast most - if not all - of the principal roles in staged productions from within the company.
For many events Kennet Opera are lucky enough to be able to work with professional musicians for some of the more complex roles, where we tend to give up-coming artists performance opportunities to aid their development, and give them chance to grow their CV.
Many important relationships with these artists have been formed, and KO actively persue links with other new talent to help promote their own career, and make themselves known for opportunities to perform with us. However, for mainly financial reasons, we are unable to cast all parts in our productions with national-standard performers.
If you would like to learn more about sponsoring a rising opera talent, or would simply like to introduce yourself as a work-hungry performer then please contact us.
Alternatively, if you are just someone who simply enjoys singing - whatever the style of music - and are interested in joining the friendly and social Kennet Opera membership, where you will improve stage skills and better your voice for the public, please contact us.
Kennet Opera’s dedicated backstage crew are heavily involved during the run-up to each staged production with the design and construction of the set, working with the Director on the early plans for the production.
Our stage sets are typically innovative and clever, making good use of the little financial resources that are available.
We have been lucky to have many skilled bodies to assist in the construction of the sets over the years, not to mention a collection of fine artists and painters to finish the set.
Productions at The Corn Exchange use the great expertise of the house technicians, providing around-the-clock support for our crew and lighting engineers.
The backstage crew are a very close-knit and social crowd, and are always keen to welcome new members to their fold, to learn the endless skills required for this mysterious art.
Please contact us for further information.
Kennet Opera's raison d'être is to 'encourage the enjoyment of and participation in concert song and staged Opera works', so, despite our limited time and resources, we take education very seriously.
Kennet Opera are dedicated to helping up-coming professionals develop - whether you fresh from college, or have spent years struggling on the circuit. While we can't give anybody a pot of cash, KO always try our utmost to help in any way we can.
Usually this is done by giving performers a chance to take major parts in our productions, enabling them to broaden their experience with juicy roles, and add all-important content to their CV.
However, as financial restricts are the biggest block in this business we normally try to cast productions from within the company membership. If any parts are left outstanding after the company audition, the doors are opened to all-comers to apply for the part. We have paid expenses for performers on a number of occasions, to be negotiated on before you accept the role.
Given that there are a vast number of performers out there hungry for stage time, but only very limited opportunity here, we regret that we cannot help everybody through performance.
However, if there is any way that we can help you - for instance adding a publicity page/link to you on our website, please let us know.
If it is legal, ethical, and within out capability, we will try to help.
Please support us; be part of something amazing.
Kennet Opera would love to hear from you, whether you would like to talk to us about our previous productions, or introduce yourself as a budding Opera star of the future looking for support. Whether you are keen to help back-stage at a production (and wish you could step the last few feet into the lights), or would just like to roll your sleeves up and contribute to the huge amount of effort required to keep the company running.
We are also very keen to build links with performers, tutors, school/colleges and other musical groups, as we are dedicated to not only developing Kennet Opera, but supporting other like-minded individuals and organisations to further themselves.
What ever you would like to talk about, we would love to hear from you.
