Genesis Opera was created to bring opera performances to audiences that do not have access to this wonderful art form. Dedicated to using Chicago area singers, instrumentalists, composers, pianists and conductors, Genesis Opera creates performance, production and learning opportunities for gifted young professional artists.
We seek to further develop and enhance artist’s experience and skills. The organization has performed for a variety of audiences. Since its first performance in February 2001, Genesis Opera has performed at Columbia College Chicago, Malcolm X College, The People's Music School, The Evanston Chapter of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Edgewater Presbyterian Church's Mather Life Ways Series, The SouthShore Cultural Center, Deerfield’s Christian Beginnings School, Chicago Public Schools, The Tapestry Center, several senior citizen centers and many more.
We are group of individuals committed to reaching out to our community ... and exposing them to the wonderful art form of opera ... and having fun along the way.
Leonard-James Johnson (Co-Founder, Artistic Director) … has performed with Genesis Opera as Bob in the production of Giancarlo Menotti’s “The Old Maid and the Thief” and as Mr. Cash in Mozart’s “The Impresario”. He has performed with many opera companies including appearances with American Group, Da Corneto and Ars Musica Chicago. Mr. Johnson received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, Flint and his graduate degree from the historic Chicago Musical College at Roosevelt University.
Bereniece Jones (Co-Founder, Treasurer) … currently teaches private voice lessons and the voice class at the People’s Music School of Chicago. Ms. Jones also continues her love for vocal music and opera with Genesis Opera. She has performed leading roles internationally and with many of Chicago’s most respected organizations including Light Opera Works, The Goodman Theatre, Chicago Opera Theater and Pegasus Players. Ms. Jones received her undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University, graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music and her graduate degree from the University of Oregon.
Laurie Campbell Nunez (President) … currently is an independent marketing and communications consultant with her own firm here in Chicago. Her educational roots and passions are firmly rooted in music. Laurie received her undergraduate degree in vocal performance from Western Michigan University. She currently is a soloist, member of a trio and choir member of Chicago’s historic Moody Church where she has toured Great Britian, Norway, Sweden, France and Spain. She can be found on many of the recordings for Moody Church from 1988 to present. However, her crowning achievement is her 7-yr. old daughter Isabel, who is quite often found helping out Genesis Opera and frequently heard singing all the roles in their productions.
Vincent D. Centeno (GO Board Member, Music Director) … Vincent is currently the Director of Music and Programs at the People’s Music School in Chicago. During his college years at DePaul University where he received both bachelor’s and master’s degree in piano performance, he has served as pianist for the opera workshop courses and musically directed the opera, “Slow Dusk” by Carlisle Floyd. Vincent's piano duo team (with Sarah Renberg) was also asked by the mime company, T. Daniel Creations, to perform with them the original piano duo version of Darius Milhaud's, "Le Boef sur le toit." The performance marked the Chicago premiere of the piece as well as the world premiere of the piano duo version with mime. As pianist and conductor, his first and foremost love is teaching music theory and its historical development. Other interests that enhances his insights about music are delving into the writings of Hermann Hesse and Thomas Hardy.
Rae-Myra Hilliard (GO Board Member) ... was originally from Buffalo, New York, Rae-Myra has lived in the Chicago area since 1996. Prior to moving to Chicago, Rae-Myra was singing professionally in the Greater Buffalo New York area as a mezzo-soprano with the Greater Buffalo Opera Company, Buffalo Opera Unlimited, Opera Sacra and the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus (Buffalo Schola Cantorum). Rae-Myra debuted with the Civic Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Duain Wolf in March 2001 as a soloist in Ralph Vaughn Williams’ Serenade to Music at the South Shore Cultural Center. In May 2002, Rae-Myra sang for Maestro Rostropovich as the soprano cover for Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem with the Chicago Symphony Chorus. Rae-Myra has performed the roles of Countess in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Serena in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Miss Pinkerton in Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief, and performed in the world premiere of Wendell Logan and Paul Carter Harrison’s Doxology with the New Black Music Repertory Ensemble under the direction of Maestro Coleridge Taylor-Perkinson.
Genesis Opera performs and reaches out to our community. We continually want to give our artists opportunity to be challenged and sing for various audiences. We also want to reach out and share the opera experience with audiences that you may not typically see in an opera audience.
Below are pictures from both our opera performances and some from our outreach ... specifically here in this instance, working with kids!
From time to time we have the luxury of recording a performance or two. As we get them formatted we will post them. Thank you to all the artists who worked so hard to pull together all the wonderful material. Enjoy their talents!
Our upcoming performances are going to be exciting and an excellent way for you to be seen and heard!
