t’s official! Fremont Opera’s online voters have chosen Rossini’s beloved comic masterpiece as our next production. Conductor David Sloss and Stage Director Jonathon Field, the creative team behind last season’s triumphant La Bohème, return to bring you this semi-staged production with the full Fremont Symphony and a cast of great singers. In Italian, with English supertitles. Save the dates and check back again for cast list and more details.
David and Barbara Sloss established Fremont Opera in 2007. Housed in the beautiful Smith Center for the Performing Arts at Ohlone College, Fremont Opera focuses on offering Fremont, and neighboring communities, the best in regional and national young singers and an enjoyable and compelling experience with this great art form.
David Sloss, Artistic Director of Fremont Opera, comes to this project with many years of experience. Since 1980, he has been Music Director and Conductor of the Fremont Symphony, which also serves as the orchestra for Fremont Opera. During his long association with West Bay Opera, beginning in 1981, he conducted over twenty productions for the Palo Alto company. Among them have been La clemenza di Tito, Don Giovanni, The Barber of Seville, Tosca, The Marriage of Figaro, Tartuffe, Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, Così fan tutte, Italian Girl in Algiers, The Turn of the Screw, The Magic Flute, Pagliacci, Carmen, Count Ory, Falstaff, La Bohème, and Candide. He served as General Director of West Bay Opera from 1997 to 2005, and as stage director for productions of Carmen, Il Trovatore, The Barber of Seville, and Lucia di Lammermoor. He has also conducted operas for Pacific Repertory Opera, Berkeley Opera, the Lamplighters, the San Francisco Talent Bank, and the Oakland Symphony. From 1970 until the start of his full-time work at West Bay Opera in 1997, he was Professor of Music at Sonoma State University. Other conducting appearances have included the Santa Cruz County Symphony, Peninsula Symphony, ALEA II, Vallejo Symphony, and the Stanford Symphony. Prior to his appointment at Sonoma State University, Mr. Sloss worked as a producer and director for WGBH-TV in Boston, where he received an Emmy nomination for the National Educational Television series A Roomful of Music. He holds degrees in music from Harvard College and Stanford University.
Barbara Sloss, General Manager of Fremont Opera, has an exceptional combination of qualifications in both artistic and management areas. She was associated with West Bay Opera for over twenty-five years. For eleven years she was Financial Accountant for an international $500-million-dollar company. More recently she has been a staff member in financial management at TheatreWorks in Palo Alto. At West Bay Opera she played a vital artistic role as Casting Coordinator. She is also a singer, and has appeared in various roles at West Bay Opera.

Artistic Director David Sloss talks about the history, the story, and the music of Rossini's great comedy, with a corps of singers on hand to perform some of the opera's most lyrical, tender and funny moments.
Auditions will take place at Ohlone College, 43600 Mission Blvd, Fremont, CA 94539, Building 2, Room 2133. Check in will be in Room 2124 (faculty lounge) and warm up rooms will be available. An accompanist will be provided. Please send a current resume and photo in advance if available digitally. Alternatively, please bring your resume and photo with you to the auditions. Also, please bring a repertoire list consisting of 4 or 5 arias you are prepared to sing.
Our August 2008 production will be Barber of Seville. Please understand that the
principal roles may be cast in advance. However, we will be looking for covers for
the lead roles as well as 8 men to serve as chorus. Some of these men might also be covers. Overall, these auditions are NOT for specific roles. You should sing whatever shows off your voice to best advantage.
Of course you may select something from one of the operas we are considering for the next 3 seasons. All productions will be semi-staged, and performed in the original language with full orchestra.
Help us start the Friends of Fremont Opera, a volunteer organization to promote Fremont Opera as a wonderful musical activity for the citizens of Fremont, Southern Alameda County and the Bay Area. It’s a great way to enjoy getting to know other opera lovers, and to support Fremont Opera with parties, special events, receptions, educational programs, and community outreach.
The only truly lasting thing that money can buy is a wonderful memory. Great opera is memorable opera. Few people know that the price of a ticket only pays for half of that memory. Here at Fremont Opera, we invite you to support beautiful music and lasting memories by making an individual gift to help our opera grow.
There a number of ways you can donate including cash, stock transfers, pledges, and planned giving. Learn which option works best for you.
