Support and Donate - Central City Opera GOLD! In 1859 that magic word echoed from the mountains of Colorado throughout the country.

Central City was at the heart of the boom, and by 1878 it was so rich that it boasted the best hotel between Chicago and San Francisco and “a genuine opera house complete with seven sets of scenery, two hot-air furnaces and a chandelier with 100 kerosene lamps.

Fifty years later, the gold rush was over and the beautiful opera house was dark. Then a group of civic leaders formed the Central City Opera House Association, dedicating their time and money to restoring the historic theater. With great fanfare, the Central City Opera House reopened in 1932.

Today, the Association is Colorado's oldest professional performing arts organization. And today, the magic of "gold" is as important as ever in the form of generous contributions from friends – local and national – who are the Association's partners in supporting year-round artistic, outreach, and preservation activities.

For 75 years, in partnership with thousands of donors and volunteers, Central City Opera has been a nationally renowned cultural resource for the people of Colorado and the region. Please join us!
2008 Summer Festival Season

Central City Opera’s 2008 Festival Season offers three productions of 20th century works in English, celebrating and coinciding with the National Performing Arts Convention (NPAC) in Denver in 2008.

The 2008 Festival opens earlier than usual, in honor of the Convention, running June 6 to Aug. 10. It features a new production of Benjamin Britten's The Rape of Lucretia, the rarely performed chamber opera about a faithful woman scorned amongst political rebellion in ancient Rome; a new production of Leonard Bernstein's popular West Side Story, the modern twist on Shakespeare's classic Romeo and Juliet tale of two lovers divided; and American composer Carlisle Floyd's Susannah, the story of an innocent heroine accused of immorality and shunned in the eyes of her rural Tennessee community.

Young Artists Training Program

The Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program is a national model for the professional development of young singers. Created by Artistic Director Emeritus John Moriarty in 1978, the rigorous 10-week program integrates daily training in diction, movement, and stage combat; individual coaching; and sessions in career management with rehearsals and performance opportunities in the summer's mainstage and surround productions.

The program, which selects 30-32 participants from nearly 1,000 applicants each year, has provided valuable training for many of America's most notable young opera professionals, including Denyce Graves, Cynthia Lawrence, Margaret Lattimore, Mary Mills, Emily Pulley, Greg Turay, Latonia Moore, Matthew Polenzani, Jesus Garcia, Chad Shelton, Daniel Belcher, and Celena Shafer.

Historic Preservation
Image from the early 20th Century of the Opera House with a long line of horses tied-up out front.
Hard rock miners, many from Wales and Cornwall, had produced the gold to create a prosperous community that boasted the Teller House, the finest hotel between Chicago and San Francisco. Not satisfied with that, the citizens of Central City subscribed funds to build "...the best and most convenient Opera House in the West," complete with eight sets of scenery, two hot air furnaces, and a chandelier with 100 kerosene lamps.

Fifty years later, the gold rush was over. Central City and its beautiful theater had fallen on hard times, when a group of civic leaders founded the Central City Opera House Association for the purpose of restoring the Opera House as a venue for a summer music and theater festival. In a mountain ghost town, in the heart of an economic depression, these leaders recognized the importance of preserving Colorado's history and providing entertainment for the people.

In July, 1932, the carefully refurbished Opera House reopened with a gala performance of Camille, directed by legendary Broadway producer Robert Edmond Jones, starring Miss Lillian Gish, and reported live by the new National Broadcasting Company's radio broadcast network.

Our mission of historic preservation is dedicated to award-winning stewardship of the Opera House and 30 other vintage properties in the Central City / Black Hawk National Landmark Historic District. The distinctive Opera House, the charming Teller House hotel, several former commecial and industrial buildings and more than two dozen houses are maintained as performance, training, and residence facilities for the Summer Opera Festival and as hallmarks of Colorado's role in the settlement of the Rocky Mountain West.

Owing to its preservation, Central City is a focal destination in Colorado's heritage tourism industry, akin to Boston's Quincy Market and Colonial Williamsburg in keeping the past alive.

Central City Opera's General/Artistic Director Pelham Pearce
Image of Central City Opera's Artistic Director Pelham G. Pearce

Pelham G. Pearce was selected in 1996 as Managing Director for Central City Opera, the fifth oldest opera company in the United States, with a nationally acclaimed Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program and annual Summer Festival. He was named General Director in May 1998.

He previously held the post of General Director for Mobile Opera from 1986-1996. During his tenure at Mobile Opera, Mr. Pearce produced the world premiere of Thea Musgrave's The Story of Harriet Tubman, which subsequently toured throughout the state of Alabama. Committed to developing new audiences through outreach and education, Mr. Pearce led the Music, Words, Opera! program, which resulted in four new works, written, created and produced by students. The middle school portion of the program was a pilot project for OPERA America.

Nationally, Mr. Pearce has served as a member of the grants review panel and chaired the overview panel for the National Endowment for the Arts, and he previously served on the OPERA America Board of Directors. He also served as a juror for the Rosa Ponselle International Voice Competition and has judged regional Met auditions. During his first year at Central City Opera, the company produced its first CD of The Ballad of Baby Doe under the Newport Classics label, and expanded its touring program throughout Colorado with a new program called Opera in the Rockies, which was honored by OPERA America. Under his leadership, Central City Opera presented the first American production of Benjamin Britten's Gloriana in 2001, the world premiere of Gabriel's Daughter in 2003 and numerous other regional premieres. Mr. Pearce is credited with reinvigorating the company's artistic vision.
