The Fiddle and The Drum is a collaboration between Jean Grand-Maitre, Alberta Ballet’s Artistic Director, and renowned singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell. The piece was first performed by Alberta Ballet in February 2007 as one of several pieces in a series entitled Dancing Joni and Other Works.
Performed by 28 dancers from Alberta Ballet, the work features the following songs from Ms. Mitchell's musical repertoire: The Fiddle and The Drum, The Beat of Black Wings, For The Roses, Passion Play, Sex Kills, If I Had a Heart, The Three Great Stimulants, If and Slouching Towards Bethlehem.
The Fiddle and The Drum explores a series of modern themes, including the contemporary follies of mankind, from our aggressive and warring nature to the seemingly unstoppable destruction of our environment. These themes are studied through Ms. Mitchell’s music and artwork and Mr. Grand-Maître’s choreography.

Do you know a young person age 7 to 12 who would like to learn about the creative side of being a dancer?
Since 1994 the National Ballet has offered the Creating Dances Summer Camp right in the same studios our dancers use to rehearse. The premise of the camp is not to train children in a dance technique, but to encourage them to explore their imagination and creativity using the disciplines of dance and music. Professional artists facilitate this process by providing the participants with a general dance and music vocabulary from which they can begin to create their own dance and music work. A design aspect is also included for a final presentation for friends and family on the final day. No previous dance experience is required; only a desire to have fun, to be creative and to dance!
The National Ballet is continually expanding this section of our website to provide current and interesting resources. This information will be of interest to those new to the art form as well as seasoned ballet-goers. Teachers, students, families and fans of all ages will certainly find these Ballet Notes, study guides and activities valuable and entertaining.
Published exclusively by The National Ballet of Canada, Ballet Notes are detailed guides to the company's dynamic repertoire. Whether you are a first-time ballet goer or a long-time subscriber Ballet Notes offer you fascinating and enlightening information that will enrich your ballet experience.
