The part of Pinkerton is sung by Arseniy Arsov. The rest of the cast: Boyka Vasileva (Suzuki), Svilen Nikolov (Sharpless), Plamen Dolapchiev (Goro), Mihail Mateev (the Bonze) and others.

Todor Kostov
Todor Kostov – tenor. Todor Kostov has been a soloist with Varna Opera for many years.

He was born on 24th August 1928 in Varna. He graduated from Musical School ‘Dobri Hristov’ and specialized opera singing under the guidance of Maestro L. Ricci in Italy. In 1953 he made his debut in the part of Cavaradossi in Tosca (Puccini) on the stage in Varna, where he was a tenor-soloist for thirty-seven years. He joined the cast of Varna Opera only six years after its establishment. His name is associated with a significant period in the history of this cultural institution – a period of enormous success, huge repertoire, national and international events.

With artistic maturity and brilliant vocal technique, Todor Kostov have re-created on the stage over thirty central tenor parts. These are the operas: Carmen, Othello, Tosca, Aida, Norma, A Masked Ball, Ariadne auf Naxos, Tsar Kaloyan, Don Carlos, Queen of Spades, Macbeth, Il Trovatore, Andre Chenier and others.

His participation as a dramatic tenor in a great number of performances is a guarantee of success, high quality, exceptional commitment and efficiency. His great charm, captivating emotionality, outstanding vocal gift and long years of dedication to Varna Opera make him a favorite singer of the citizens and guests of Varna. Todor Kostov has been awarded many national prizes and certificates: Honors Singer of the Committee for Culture, Sts. Cyril and Methodius First Degree Medal, the title ‘People’s Artist’, a laureate of Dimitrov Prize.

He gave guest-performances in all of Europe and also Cuba, China, Mongolia. Everywhere he sang he contributed to the glory of Bulgarian opera art.

Critics have honored him with praises for his brilliant artistic skills both in Bulgaria and abroad. His most acclaimed performances are in partnership with his wife, the unforgettable Maria Bohachek (May her memory live forever!).

Todor Kostov dedicated to Varna and its Opera Theatre his best creative years, his whole energy and perseverance, and quite deservedly won the love of the demanding audiences.
A performer of long professional experience, working with enthusiasm and imagination, the singer has left in us a memory of perfection, harmony and beauty.

On 21st December 2003 Varna Opera celebrated the 75th anniversary of its favorite artist. At this concert the renowned Bulgarian singer was presented by the Municipality of Varna with the Freedom of the City of Varna for his outstanding contribution to the cultural development of Varna.

PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

The story of the Varna Philharmonic began in 1913 when an amateur symphony orchestra was founded. In 1926 it participated with great success under the direction of Assen Naidenov in the First Summer Music Celebrations in Varna which later grew into the International Music Festival "Varna Summer".

In 1946 on the initiative of the conductor and violinist Prof. Sasha Popov the Varna State Symphony was founded, which in 1968 became the State Philharmonic.

During its first years it was led respectively by the conductors Ruslan Raichev, Vassil Stefanov, Yosko Yosifov, Konstantin Iliev.

The greatest tribute for the professional growth of the orchestra should go to the conductors Emil Glavanakov, Ivan Marinov and Yordan Dafov. Since the beginning of 2000, the Head conductor is Stanislav Oushev.

The orchestra has an extensive repertoire which includes symphonies, cantatas and oratorios by various composers, as well as many works by Bulgarian composers from different generations.

Their performances included many famous musicians - Ifra Nieman, Leonid Kogan, David Eustrah, Alexis Weissenberg, Pablo Kazals, Yuri Bukov, Ruggiero Ricci, Victor Tretyakov, Yanos Starker, Mikhail Pletnyov, Vera Gornostaeva, Mincho Minchev, Vanya Milanova, Georgi Badev and many others.

Traditionally the orchestra participates in the opening ceremony of the International Music Festival "Varna Summer".

The Symphony Orchestra has participated in all prestigious Bulgarian festivals and has toured Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Russia, France, Austria, Spain, Italy, etc. It has made many recordings for the Bulgarian National Radio and the National TV.


EVGENII STANIMIROV




Evgeniy Stanimirov was born in 1971 in Varna. He finished the French Language School and graduated from the University of Economics in his native city. In 1997 he graduated from the State Music Academy in Sofia. From 1997 to 1999 he took a specialized course at the Academy of La Scala Theatre in Milan, Italy.

He is laureate of National Competition ‘Sv. Obretenov’, Provadia (1995). He won the first prize at International Competition ‘Giuseppe di Stefano’ in Trapani, Italy in 2001.

In 1998 and 1999 he gave many concerts in Bulgaria, Italy and other countries. Most memorable of them are his participations in Concert of the Academy La Scala conducted by Riccardo Muti.

From 2000 to 2002 he played the part of Ramfis in Aida by Verdi, directed by Franco Zeffirelli at the theatres of Busseto, Milan, Ravenna, Treviso, Bari and Novara. He also sings different bass parts in operas by R. Wagner, Puccini, Giordano, Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Bellini and others.

In the summer of 2003 he made his debut on the stage of Varna Opera in the part of Colline at the premier of La Boheme by Puccini. Since April 2004, Evgeniy Stanimirov has been soloist with Opera and Philharmonic Society – Varna, where he has been very successful in the bass repertoire: Don Basilio (The Barber of Seville), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Cesare Angelotti (Tosca), Leporello (Don Giovanni), Raymond (Lucia di Lammermoo

BORISLAV DONCHEV - violin

He has been a violinist with Varna Symphony Orchestra since 1967, and since 1982 has been concertmaster of Varna Philharmonic Orchestra.

Borislav Donchev is a musician with a bright talent and distinctive soloist qualities which he shows as concertmaster. In his thirty-five-year-long creative activity he has built rich repertoire which includes some of the most significant works in musical literature.

Borislav Donchev is an indisputable authority in the Orchestra and the city of Varna and also appreciated and respected by the musicians in all of Bulgaria. His experience and professionalism have helped to raise the artistic level of Varna Orchestra. He is associated with some of its greatest creative achievements throughout the years.


TODORKA KOLEVA - Violin

She started learning the violin when she was five years old under the guidance of her father.

In 1967 she finished Music School ‘Dobri Hristov’ in Varna and started her studies at the Music Academy in Sofia under the guidance of Prof. Leon Souroujon and Prof. Boyan Danailov.

After graduation she was immediately auditioned for an orchestra-member of State Philharmonic Orchestra – Varna (1972). Since 2002 she has been concertmaster of Opera-Philharmonic Society – Varna.


ANNA FURNADZHIEVA - Violin

Anna Furnadzhieva graduated from State Music Academy ‘Pancho Vladigerov’ in 1991 in the violin classes of Prof. Stoyka Milanova and Associate Prof. Eli Kasakova and the chamber music classes of Prof. Dimo Dimov and Prof. Zheni Zaharieva.

In 1990 she took a course in orchestra mastership in Trento, Italy. From 1991 to 1993 she was a member of Symphonietta Orchestra of the Bulgarian National radio, which is a great school for every musician.

In 1993 Anna Furnadzhieva became orchestra member of Varna Opera, and in 1994 she started working as assistant concertmaster. The young violinist gathers experience under the baton of some of the best Bulgarian conductors. Since 2003 Anna Furnadzhieva has been concertmaster of Varna Opera and Philharmonic Society.




ATANAS DASKALOV - Cello

Atanas Daskalov was a student at the Boarding-School for Talented Children in Sofia, where he studied for three years until it was closed down. He finished the Music School in Sofia and graduated with honors from the Music Academy, Instrumental Music Department. In 1966 he took a specialization course with Prof. Bohush Heran in Prague, the Czech Republic.

Since 1st July 1967 he has been member of Varna Opera, and since 1971 he has been a leading cellist. For twenty-seven years the renowned instrumentalist has been a lecturer in cello at the National School of Arts in Varna and for over fifteen years has been assistant conductor of its Symphonic Orchestra.

BORISLAV DASKALOV - Cello

Born in Varna, Boris Daskalov started learning the cello when he was a child and finished the Music School in his native city. Then he continued his education at the Music Academy under the guidance of Prof. Zdravko Yordanov. He has taken specialized courses with Maurice Gendron and Alain Meunier (France) and Robert Bex. He has played in different orchestras and chamber formations: Varna Chamber Orchestra, Bulgarian Chamber Orchestra (founded by Prof. Emil Kamilarov and Prof. Dina Schneidermann), Sofia Opera, Symphonic Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio, Army Ensemble, Dobrich Chamber Orchestra and Varna Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1979 to 1984 he taught cello, chamber music and orchestra playing at the Conservatories in Rabat and Casablanca (Morocco). He is a permanent member of Varna Philharmonic Orchestra, Varna Festival Chamber Orchestra (since its foundation), Festival Symphonic Orchestra – Sofia. Since 2002 he has been a permanent member of the Festival Symphonic Orchestra of Tenerife (Canary Islands).
