Introduction
Flanders Operastudio is a post-graduate training for young singer-actors with a classical education in music and a special interest in opera and music-theatre. It provides in an intensive preparation for a professional career. During one year and in a small group, the internationally selected students work together on several projects. During three to five weeks they work on specific themes from the large field of vocal music. All projects are supported by courses that focus on the specific content. A group of teachers of world-wide fame will guide the students at all times during this year. At the end of the project, there is a performance in public. In that way the students discover how to develop their skills and become true stage personalities.
Flanders Operastudio also provides in a special program for repetitors. This program is an ideal preparation for young repetitors for the opera, the music-theatre and for accompanists. The student-repetitors are on a permanent base brought in to contact with the praxis of singers. They take part in the projects and are accompanied by singing-teachers, coaches and dramaturges. Under the supervision of their teachers, they play an active role in the projects.
Flanders Operastudio is an official educational program organized by the Flemish Government of Education and provides in an official diploma.
Operastudio Flanders is organising new auditions for the academic year 2007-2008. You find all information here.
Flanders Operastudio: link between study and profession
When Guy Joosten (theatre and opera director), Marc Clémeur (Manager of the Flemish Opera) and Herman Mariën (then head of Dramatic Art, Music and Dance at the Antwerp High School), took the initiative to found the FLANDERS OPERASTUDIO in 1998, they responded to a long-time need, namely the founding of a post-high school training for opera singers. With this specialized complement to the basic training already in existence, the Operastudio filled a position which provides a bridge between training and the professional world of opera and music theatre. The training functions as a springboard into building professional experience in opera singing. It is an intensive course, but the students are afforded sufficient freedom to develop in a direction which they map out for themselves, in consultation with their teachers. The students receive individual guidance, which breaks through the training within the standard school structure and allows the personal career to germinate.
Operastudio Flanders' mission is more up-to-date than similar initiatives abroad, which are either integrated into an opera house or part of a training institute. Flanders Operastudio has an autonomous artistic and educational function which it is able to put into effect throughout its various departments. This open structure is revealed to the general public through an active policy where new target groups and collaborative enterprises are brought into being. In that regard the Operastudio does not limit its focus to being exclusively Flemish but is principally European and/or international.
In addition to the synergy it already enjoys with the Flemish Opera, the Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels Conservatories and the Ghent City Concert Hall, the Bijloke, new collaboration has emerged with (foreign) institutes and courses, cultural organizers and musical ensembles: the Opera Studio Nederland, the Spectra-ensemble, the Brakke Grond (Amsterdam), Stadsschouwburg Bruges. The studio's multi-disciplinary character is also shown in its collaboration with cultural partners. By organizing concerts, recitals, public courses and smaller productions the Operastudio hopes to appeal to new, young target groups. The Opera's student candidates come from university-level musical training or from a tertiary artistic training, and equivalent levels abroad. They are selected by the Operastudio as students through international auditions.
FLANDERS OPERASTUDIO offers a one or two-year specialized training to young singers of all nationalities who are either students or at the start of their professional career. In addition, Flanders Operastudio started a course for coaches in the 03-04 academic year, in response to a clearly-expressed request from the opera sector
Fixed lessons
During these lessons, attention is constantly focused on vocal, pianistic, physical and intellectual perfection. The movement training, split between conditioning and specific movement training, and acting training are given on a regular basis.
Where individual lessons are concerned the teacher's available time is divided equally among the students. A timetable is drawn up each week detailing the hours.
auditions
In order to be admitted to Flanders Operastudio, applicants must pass an audition. Auditions take place at least twice a year: once in Belgium, at the operastudio in Ghent and once abroad, in an institution associated with the Operastudio. Vocal technique and stylistic and stage experience are required, and a higher education singing qualification (university or equivalent level) is essential. The applicants must have sufficient interest in and knowledge of the present-day opera world. The maximum age for applicants is 32. The shortlist of applicants is drawn up on the basis of the curriculum. The candidates are asked to prepare three arias for the audition (at least one of which must be in Italian and one with recitativo secco), plus a short spoken excerpt from a libretto, play or piece of prose. They may also be asked to rehearse and perform a short vocal work during the audition. The auditions may be followed by an interview about the applicant’s motivation for a career in opera. The candidates for the repetiteur-course have to prepare the Finale Second Act Don Giovanni (Mozart); they have to accompany themselves in a scene from a Wagner, Puccini or Verdi-opera (5 to 10 min.) and have to sight-read and sing a part from a score while following a conductor. They also have top present a short piece of prose. The annual fee for the Flanders Operastudio course is 1000 Euro. The expenses incurred in attending these auditions are to be paid by the applicants.

Dialogues des Carmélites
Sat 8 Mar 2008 - Sun 13 Apr 2008
Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites takes us within the closed setting of a Carmelite convent at the time of the French Revolution. The music draws from a very human emotional journey. Flanders Opera presents the work in the impressive production by Robert Carsen.

Mission
Flanders Opera is not only Flanders' single opera house, with two magnificent buildings in Antwerp and Ghent, but also a main player in the international field.
It is our aim to bring contemporary music theatre, dealing with themes that are relevant for people of our day and time. We perform both unknown repertoire (contemporary and baroque) and the famous classics, but always in an original and fire new way.
To achieve all this, we choose to work with promising talent from Belgium and abroad. Many of them are making or have made their name at the big houses afterwards.
Except for scenic opera productions, Flanders opera also presents some operas in concert version, a concert cycle, a series of song recitals (entitled 'Great Voices') and a series of lunchtime concerts.
We also welcome many guests during a Flanders Opera season. The Royal Ballet of Flanders is one of our privileged partners.
In that way we are able to captivate the attention of over 120000 visitors per season from all over Belgium and other European countries.
As the opera house is situated in the centre of town, you may have difficulties in finding a parking space, so we recommend carpark Roosevelt, Rooseveltplaats 12. From Monday to Thursday open until 1:30 AM, from Friday morning to Sunday night continuously open.
