“As the crowd in miniature suits and party dresses gazed over the edge of the pit at intermission and applauded fanatically as the witch was turned to gingerbread, it was clear that the family opera was a great idea. As enjoyable as it is to rediscover classical music around the holidays, it's even better to experience it for the first time.” ~The Washington Post

A new holiday tradition begins this winter as Washington National Opera brings Engelbert Humperdinck's captivating opera Hansel and Gretel to the historic Lincoln Theatre, directed by David Gately and starring the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artists with the Washington National Opera Orchestra. A holiday classic since its 1893 premiere in Weimar,

Germany, Hansel and Gretel is the perfect chance to experience the joy of opera with the entire family.

Cavalleria Rusticana In Concert

May 25m, 30, 2008

Act I: Orchestral Selections from Italian Masters
The WNO Orchestra performs works by master Italian composers.

Act II: Cavalleria Rusticana
Composed by Pietro Mascagni
Libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci

Set in a Sicilian village, this melodramatic tale of "rustic chivalry" follows the fickle and passionate love triangle between Turiddu, who loves Lola; Santuzza, who loves Turiddu, the father of her child; and Alfio, the all-too-trusting husband of Lola. Mascagni's music takes us through the emotional heights and depths of this tragic love story.

"Force of nature" mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick makes her company debut as she joins Italian tenor Salvatore Licitra (Andrea Chénier, Tosca), American baritone Gordon Hawkins (Porgy and Bess, Das Rheingold) and the Washington National Opera Orchestra and Chorus in a concert version of Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana

Site Title: Washington National Opera
Site Desc: Under the stewardship of General Director Plácido Domingo, Washington National Opera continues to move confidently forward on a great adventure that began when the company was founded in 1956. Five decades and countless artistic leaps later, the Opera has achieved the stature of a world class company and plays to standing-room-only audiences at the Kennedy Center Opera House. The company recently received the designation "The National Opera" by the Congress of the United States of America. Washington National Opera has earned its position through the number and quality of its new productions and by championing lesser known works of significant musical worth rarely presented on today's opera stages. It is committed to sustaining new American opera, presenting new works in crucial second productions to expand the operatic repertory. It has been hailed for its work with operas on the epic scale, as the British magazine Opera Now recently stated, "Washington National Opera is carving out a new area of expertise . . . staging grand spectacles to exacting standards with precision and power not often seen even at the world's top houses." The company is also known for its discovery and nurturing of important young talent and the international collaboration system it has pioneered with leading foreign opera companies
