About County Wexford
Wexford is a historic county with bustling towns such as Enniscorthy, Gorey, New Ross and Wexford Town.
Wexford Town is the lively and ancient capital of the county with excellent shopping, restaurants and nightlife. The world famous Wexford Festival Opera takes place here every year, while the region's ancient history is uncovered at the Irish National Heritage Park just outside town.

In New Ross, the Dunbrody Famine Ship offers a fascinating insight into the transatlantic voyages taken by Irish emigrants during the Great Famine years. Wexford's maritime heritage is also celebrated at the Hook Lighthouse, one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world, while in Enniscorthy, the National 1798 Rebellion Centre explores the birth of modern democracy in Ireland.

The county offers a mix of mountainous scenery, river valleys with fine fishing, and mile upon mile of clean, golden beaches. Yet Wexford is also a county of parks, walking trails and spectacular gardens, including the John F. Kennedy Arboretum near New Ross and Johnstown Castle Estate and Gardens near Wexford Town.

Festival History
It all began with a gramophone recital. The great Scottish novelist and founder of the Gramophone magazine, Sir Compton Mackenzie, had been persuaded during a visit to Ireland to give a talk to the Wexford Opera Study Circle in November 1950. The Chairman of the Circle, Dr. Tom Walsh struck up an excellent relationship with him and Sir Compton suggested Wexford should stage an opera in their little theatre.
A while later Dr Tom having studied the programmes for other festivals discussed the idea of a local version with his friends Dr. Des Ffrench, Eugene McCarthy, owner of White's Hotel, and Seamus O'Dwyer an official in the local Post Office. Despite falling short of their fund-raising target, they nonetheless went ahead and ran a Festival of Music and the Arts from the 21st of October to the 4th of November 1951, with a production of Balfe's "The Rose of Castile" on the first four nights of November. Sir Compton was present and became the Festival President, a position he led until his death in 1972.
