WHO?

Soloists, chorus' and orchestras have delighted audiences with their skill, artistry and flair while imaginative and innovative directors, stages and settings have set a superb standard for the amateur dramatics world. White Horse Opera was founded in 1991 and has produced 17 grand operas including the big A, B, C, of Opera. We also perform fundraising concerts and recitals through the year.

Playing The Part...

The Chorus consists of local talent while our soloists come from all across the country

History & Past Productions

White Horse Opera was founded in 1991 with the aim of bringing full-costume grand opera, sung in English, to the people of Wiltshire at an affordable price.

About us

White Horse Opera was founded in 1991 with the aim of bringing full-costume grand opera, sung in English, to the people of Wiltshire at an affordable price.

We are based in Devizes – performing at the Town Hall and Corn Exchange, but our members and supporters come from far and wide. Our annual productions have included some of the best-loved of the opera repertoire: Aida, La Boheme and Carmen together with more challenging works such as Count Ory and Faust.

Combining local talent with professional music directors, soloists and orchestras gives a result well beyond that normally achieved by purely amateur music groups. For example, 2004’s Carmen cost in excess of £20,000 to produce and involved a cast of over 70 with a 21-strong professional orchestra. Over 1000 tickets were sold for between only £5 and £16.

We are largely self-funding and are supported by an active Friends group of over 80 members

Auditions

You are invited to audition for the solo roles in White Horse Opera's next production.

White Horse Opera is a company with amateur status, based in Devizes, Wiltshire, where its performances take place.

In the month of October 2008 we shall be presenting a fully staged production in English of Franz Lehár, Victor Léon and Leo Stein's "The Merry Widow ".

Chorus members do not have to have an audition. We want people keen to sing.

* The company shall intend to produce at least one major opera ("The Opera") per year in, or near Devizes and that opera to be of the highest standard possible with the available resources.

* The committee of White Horse Opera is to appoint a Director and Musical Director who are to have overall artistic control of The Opera for the duration of their appointment.

* To provide for local singers who are members and attend rehearsals regularly ("The Company") to develop their skills and to perform regularly. eg Soloists.

* All major roles (as defined by the Musical Director and Director) to be selected at open auditions ("Soloists"). The audition panel of at least three members will include the Director, Musical Director and a member of the Committee. Other members can be appointed or co-opted as necessary but the panel shall not exceed seven people. The audition panel (and co-opted members) is to be appointed by the main Committee.
* One of the factors to be borne in mind when choosing The Opera is the abilities within The Company. The Director and Musical Director, being responsible for the standard of The Opera, are to be the final arbiters of the judgement.

* Small operas (one per annum?) and concerts (2 or 3 per annum?) to be produced from time to time, in which members of The Company as well as Soloists (past, present and potential) shall be able to perform.

Friends of WHO

White Horse Opera is supported through sponsorship and fundraising. We are always looking for more singers and more "Friends" (no experience necessary!) Without their generosity, response and encouragement White Horse Opera would not function as a community venture. Each Opera costs in the region of £20,000 to stage. This is an annual commitment to the Devizes area which is becoming increasingly difficult to fund. By becoming a Friend of White Horse Opera you will make a much valued and vital contribution.
