Overview
The Brevard Music Center offers summer music study to students age 14 and older, with separate programs for students of high school age and students of college age and older. The 2008 season runs from June 25 through August 10.
Throughout its 71-year history, the heart of the Brevard Music Center has been orchestral performance. Students in the Instrumental Studies program rehearse daily and maintain a regular concert schedule. High school wind players and percussionists also perform in symphonic band.
About BMC
Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, the Brevard Music Center (BMC) has been providing young musicians with the opportunity to develop their talents for over seventy years.
Each summer more than 400 students, ages 14 through post-college, join professional musicians to eat, breathe and sleep music for seven weeks. In addition to a rigorous schedule of instruction, students collaborate with faculty and guest artists in more than eighty public performances.
The combination of studying with distinguished professional musicians and an intense performance schedule sets the Brevard Music Center apart from other summer music institutions and gives students the opportunity to understand the world of a professional musician.
Mission
The Brevard Music Center, a summer institute and festival, teaches gifted young musicians to prepare and perform great musical works at a high artistic level.
Since its beginning, the objective of the Brevard Music Center has been to provide music education of high quality. Early literature stated the Center's aims quite succinctly: "A Vacation with a Purpose: to develop the abilities and broaden the horizons of young musicians, to promote fellowship among participants, and to enrich our musical culture." Today's mission continues in this vein.
History
In 1936 James Christian Pfohl opened a summer band camp for boys on the campus of Davidson College in North Carolina. Fifty young instrumentalists appeared for that first session.
The camp lasted seven summers at Davidson and spent one summer at Queens College in Charlotte. In 1944 Pfohl moved his camp to a beautiful site just outside the town of Brevard in western North Carolina, and the now coeducational Transylvania Music Camp was born.
A few years later, Pfohl established a festival at the camp, and this soon became an integral part of the summer activities. The name was changed to "Brevard Music Center" in 1955.
In 1965 Henry Janiec succeeded James Christian Pfohl as artistic director at Brevard. Mr. Janiec led the Center for more than thirty years, through the 1996 season. After an exhaustive national search, David Effron became artistic director in 1997.
Beginning in October 2007, Keith Lockhart became the Artistic Advisor and Principal Conductor.
Organization
In addition to the seasonal staff, BMC has a year-round staff of 17. During the educational season, staff increases to include approximately 60 faculty members and 50 additional support staff.
As an independent institution, BMC relies on its own management practices and the support of the private sector. Its sole support from the public sector is an annual Statewide Arts Resource grant, which constitutes less than 6 percent of its budget. The rest is earned through performance ticket sales or is received in donations.
In order to make its unique educational program accessible to as many talented young people as possible, the Music Center's comprehensive fees are competitive for comparable programs in the country. A major scholarship program for more than 90 percent of its students is solicited annually from individuals, corporations and foundations.
