Customs and traditions
The History of the Royal Danish Theater
In the period 1722-1728, the Danish dramatist Ludvig Holberg, in an unprecedented outburst of creativity, wrote a series of comedies that laid down the foundations of modern Danish theater. His works were staged in the ‘Comedy House’ (Commediehuus) in Copenhagen’s Lille Grønnegade. The advent of state pietism put an abrupt end to the festivities in Lille Grønnegade, but after the death of the pious king Christian VI in 1648, amore liberal attitude prevailed in the capital. A small group of actors, remembering and saluting Holberg’s ‘poetical rapture’, exploited the new cultural atmosphere in Copenhagento form their own company. On the occasion of the opening of the theater in 1748, they were just 8 actors and 4 actresses, and they performed two French comedies. A company of this size was only just able to fill out the roles involved in a revival of the ‘good old days’ of Holberg and Molière’s comedies in Lille Grønnegade. Later on, there followed the comedies of Beaumarchais and his roguish barber Figaro – and a vogue for sentimental German drama.
As of 15 January 2005, the further development of the Royal Danish Opera will take place in the new opera house, which has not only spacious facilities ideal for the major romantic operas, but also a small stage geared to operatic innovation, criss-crossing between traditional genres.
The History of the Royal Danish Ballet
The original staff of actors may have been small, but the group of dancers was even smaller: 2 males, and 1 female. Trouble and strife can arise even in such a small group, and when this came to the notice of the theatre executive, they all got the sack. Curtains for the ballet.
Of course, the dancing continued, albeit under rather chaotic conditions. Italian Ballet Masters, who had been imported to do the job, tended to last but one winter season in the freezing North. Vincenzo Galeotti was the first Ballet Master to bring stability to the theatre: this was in 1775. He is, in fact, the father of the Royal Danish Ballet, creating around 50 works for the Danish stage before his death in 1816. The only one of these ballets, which has been preserved, is The Whims of Cupid and the Ballet Master (1786) – but on the other hand it is the oldest ballet in the world still staged to this day..
