WELCOME - to a new season and many new and exciting experiences in the magical world of Opera and Musical Theater, a melting pot where music, song and dance come together to give spectators of all ages an experience for life.
Kristiansund Opera has built up an impressive breadth of repertoire and is renown for the artistic quality of its productions, but there is still more to be done, and there are three important reasons why we are fighting to develop not just Kristiansund Opera but regional opera as a concept: Artistic Value.
Art nourishes the senses. We all need the positive influence music, dance, drama, painting and sculpture have in our lives. The communication between the artist and the audience is of paramount importance in this process.
Art, as a Catalyst in developing the local community.
Sociologists have pointed out the importance of art in the society of the future. Communities that manage to develop a rich cultural life will also be able to develop the kind of urban environment the youth of tomorrow will be seeking. This will not only effect the industrial development of the area, but also the pattern of domestic development. The Arts will therefore become an important element in future regional politics.
Children, the artists of tomorrow.
Every child in Norway is now being given the opportunity to attend a school for art and culture, and the place of artistic subjects in school is being upgraded, in order to ensure that the new generation learn creativity and adaptability, assets they will need in the future. Central government has not laid down any hard and fast rules as to how this objective is to be achieved, how we build up the artistic environment and give children throughout our country the opportunity to experience art in their everyday lives.
If scientists and politicians are correct in their belief that art and culture are among the most central elements in the development of society as a whole, it is an eye opener that only 0,6% of the total national budget is earmarked for the arts.
Welcome to a new season in the Kristiansund Opera
Here you will find dramatic and comedic grand Opera. Top Norwegian artists, working alongside local artists and amateurs, classic tales and a kaleidoscope of concerts to sort all tastes.
Three islands form the historic dried-cod capital of Norway, Kristiansund, and the town is connected by bridges and a lively harbor. You should not leave Kristiansund without tasting ”bacalao” at one of the restaurants. A boat trip to the fishing village of Grip, amid an archipelago of 80 islets and skerries, makes a wonderful excursion. Grip is dotted with brightly painted timber houses, and the stave church from the 15th century and the lighthouse built in 1888, are worthwhile. It was the abundance of fish in the sea surrounding these islands that lured the first inhabitants to Grip. There are no permanent residents now, but in the summer many fishers dock in the harbor. Simple accomodation is also available. A stay in poor weather on this low-lying islet can be a powerful experience.
Getting there: From June to late August there is a daily boat connection from Kristiansund to Grip.
