Marc Blitzstein Thea Musgrave Hugo Weisgall Carlisle Floyd Enter Anthony Davis
A co-production with the Boston Lyric Opera and Opera Colorado.

Four very different operas, each a perfect example of the art form. From the magic of The Tales of Hoffman to the tragic beauty of Madame Butterfly, the fresh charm of Una Cosa Rara and the power of Troilus and Cressida, this is opera for everyone.
Landmarks in OTSL History
Opera Theater was founded in the spring of 1976 by Richard Gaddes, with a small group of opera-lovers who were determined to bring festival-quality opera to the St. Louis area. With a budget of $135,000 they presented an 11-performance season in English with a mixture of familiar and unconventional repertory sung by young Americans including Sheri Greenawald and Vinson Cole -- a style of production which continues to this day. Since 1985 the company has been led by general director Charles MacKay, with artistic director Colin Graham and music director Stephen Lord.

“The Opera Center is transforming Opera Theater in ways we can hardly imagine,” Charles MacKay says. “From the spectacular rehearsal spaces to the storage rooms downstairs, putting all of OTSL together brings an incredible infusion of energy to the company, and serves as a tangible symbol of the national stature of this company.”

Thanks to the generosity of the Levy family and others, and to the heroic dedication of developer and OTSL board member Steve Trampe, who shepherded the project day by day since the beginning, the company’s new home was completed in time for the 2006 season.

Steve Ryan, OTSL’s technical director, was another key player in the project. “The outside of the building is just the beginning,” he says. “ When people get inside – when they see the scale and hear the sound of the big rehearsal spaces – we love to see the excitement on their faces.”
