The outer structure of the new theatre is built in stone,

Built on the site of the old Carlo Felice, the new theater, designed by Aldo Rossi, is based on an idea that was already apparent in projects by Chela and Scarpa: to set up a covered area of 400 square metres, in which the theater would serve as the ideal link between Galleria Mazzini and piazza De Ferrari.
The Galleria Mazzini and the theatre are however very different in architectural style. The piazza is an open-air lobby; the walls are panelled with stone slabs and decorated with metal columns and beams.
The architects focused mainly on two main concerns in designing the new Teatro Carlo Felice: first and foremost, the need to reconstruct the theatre exactly where it was originally built, and secondly, the desire to equip the new structure with the latest technology. The latter concern led to the imposing stage tower, rising 60 m above the ground. In practice the only vestiges of the old theatre designed by Barabino that remain today, are the columns, the pronaos, the Latin inscription and the terrace facing via XXV Aprile, that opens onto one of the lobbies. The current structure is much more compact and geometric, the stage tower is a parallelepiped, rising linearly above the ground, decorated only by a cornice. The pit, the lobbies and other public facilities are contained in a smaller parallelepiped, from which the pronaos and portico rise.

The outer structure of the new theatre is built in stone, plaster and iron, while the interiors are decorated in marble and wood. These are durable materials that lend an air of eternity, security and invulnerability to the building.

The interior
The interior A large staircase leads to the atrium. From the entrance of the theatre, going down a stairway, one enters a hall that could seat about 200 spectators. Equipped with a small stage and independent from the rest of the theatre, this hall is used for congresses, conferences and musical gatherings. The atrium affords access to the press office and the first lobby.
The main lobby, of a surface area of 600 square metres, is decorated with frescoes and tapestries.

The lantern window
the lantern window A characteristic element of the new Carlo Felice is the polygonal lantern window visible in the lobby above the entrance. This is a sort of luminous cone or pyramid that runs through the entire height of the building, going through all the floors, so as to allow sunlight to penetrate through to the covered area.

The tower
The stage tower The setting in which the theater's technical units operate, is absolutely fascinating. The stage tower, that houses the machine that lends life to performances, is the scene of a delicate ballet between human hands and sophisticated gears. The theater is in fact equipped with four stages, a main stage, a dorsal stage behind the main stage, and two lower stages, all aligned and managed by integrated computerized electronic systems.
These stage handling facilities, computerized lighting, the sophisticated directors' cabins for filming, and some of Italy's best acoustics, each play their part in making the Teatro Carlo Felice, one of the country's finest emotion factories.

This year’s opera season offers a great repertoire of international theater music with an important opening onto twentieth century works, progressing and amplifying the course begun during the previous seasons.

The theme throughout these works is spiritually deeply inspired, with masterpieces narrating passions and stories, public and private, characterized by an intense ethical message.

Projects programmed for in-depth studies on all the operas (study courses, seminars, explanatory conferences, round tables, record auditions) may be attended.
