To promote an appreciation of opera and to establish opera as an integral part of the cultural landscape of Singapore.
In 1985, a group of opera aficionados, under the banner of The National University of Singapore Society, initiated the production of opera in Singapore. After staging four operas in five years, it was decided that opera production be put on a more permanent footing. This led to the formation of The Singapore Lyric Opera in 1990 (then known as The Singapore Lyric Theatre) as a public company limited by guarantee.
Since the inaugural production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute in 1991, the company has presented operas, concerts and musical events annually. These productions provided opportunities for Singapore and other Asian artistes to perform with internationally renowned singers.
While facing the challenges of a young arts company, Singapore Lyric Opera garnered several milestones which include:
* participated in the Singapore Arts Festival as early as 1992;
* premiered Bunga Mawar, an opera written by renowned local composer, Mr Leong Yon Pin, at the 1997 Singapore Festival of Asian Performing Arts;
* presented a breakthrough production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1997;
* co-produced Il Trovatore in 2001 with the Opera Guild Foundation and the Cultural Centre of the Philippines;
* co-produced Tosca (2003) and The Merry Widow (2004) with Lyric Opera Malaysia; and
* presented a highly successful run of Madama Butterfly in 2005 directed by acclaimed theater director Ivan Heng at the Esplanade Theater.
* Presented a contemporary staging of Rossini's The Barber of Seville (2007) that brought the house down !
Objectives
To enrich and widen the scope of Singapore's multicultural heritage;
To encourage and promote an appreciation of opera and vocal drama; and
To contribute to the making of a more artistically sensitive and culturally vibrant Singapore society.
The Singapore Lyric Opera Chorus was established in 1990 under the name of The Singapore Lyric Theater Chorus. In 1999, the new name was adopted in line with the change in the company's name. The chorus offers opportunities for opera enthusiasts and like-minded singers with fine voices and good acting abilities to fulfill their aspirations by practicing their art in opera productions of international standards. Weekly practice sessions are held on Tuesday evening.
This annual event will be graced by Dr Ng Eng Hen, Patron of SLO and Minister for Education and Second Minister for De fence. Funds raised will support the production of operas and concerts that will make Singapore more culturally exciting and vibrant.
