About Theater
The Perm Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theater is one of Russia’s most distinguished artistic companies. Perm, spectacularly perched above the Kama river, is a city with old musical traditions. The Theater as we know it today was founded in 1870. Since then, it has produced a growing number of classical and contemporary works with an emphasis on the operas and ballets of Pyotr Thaikovsky who was born near Perm. Perm was also the home of Sergei Diaghilev, the world — famous impresario and the genius of «Ballets Russes», who launched Anna Pavlova and Nijinsky on the European stage.
The theatre is a basis for hosting Diaghilev festivals.
The repertoire highlights the classics which is constantly renovated and being carefully preserved, the Russian classics featuring Borodin’s Prince Igor, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Tsar’s Bride, Kaschey the Immortal, Snowmaiden, Musorgsky’s Boris Godunov. The public can also enjoy the most popular operas by Verdi, Puccini, Mozart, Massenet, Leoncavallo, as well as the contemporary works. The repertoire has been shaped by staging the productions which arise the interest of both the public and the critics: The Flying Dutchman by R. Wagner, Maddalena by S. Prokofiev, one-act operas by F. Poulenk and M. de Falla, Cleopatre by J. Massenet, ThreeProzorov Sisters to the music by Alexander Tchaikovsky, based on Anton Chekhov, which was world premiered on the Perm stage, and others.
The theater is headed by Artistic Director, winner of the State Award George Isaakyan, Principal Conductor, People’s Artist of Bash kortostan, Valery Platonov, Ballet master in Chief David Avdysh, Principal Chorus master, People’s Artist of Russia, winner of the State Award of Russia Vladimir Vasiliev.
It has become a good tradition to stage co-productions: Grieg’s Peer Gynt, choreographed by Ben Stevenson (USA), Russian-Spanish production of Strauss’s Salome (for the festival in Madrid, 1995), G. Balanchine’s one-act ballets Concerto Barocco, La Sonnambula, Donizetti-Variations, and Ballet Imperial mounted for Perm ballet thanks to the joint Russian — American projects, Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel, staged by Opera Ireland artistic director Dieter Kaegi.
The Opera Company received the national prestigious Golden Masque award for Donizetti’s Don Pasquale (1996) and Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame (1998). In 1999 a group of Perm directors won the highest State Award of Russia for mounting a cycle of operas based on Pushkin lyrics and called Pushkin in Opera.
Traditionally, Perm is the center for holding an Open Russian Ballet competition Arabesque supervised by Vladimir Vasiliev and Ekaterina Maximova.
Closely cooperating with the theatre are famous Russian set designers Yu. Ustinov, I. Akimova, V. Okunev, Yu. Kharikov, A. Kozhenkova.
The Tchaikovsky Perm State Ballet is now widely recognized as being one of the most prestigious Ballet companies in the world. Ballet came into its own there with the institution of a permanent company in the mid 1920’s. A performance of Giselle opened the first ballet season in Perm in 1926.
In more recent times, the famous Kirov Ballet was evacuated to Perm during the Second World War, seeking safety there. It was not unnatural that the Perm Ballet was hugely influenced by the traditions and standards of the Kirov school.
With a company of 70 dancers its current repertoire features ballet’s most-treasured classics as well as the works by contemporary choreographers.
The Company is unique in that it draws all of its dancers from its own school, which is one of the most prestigious training institutions for ballet in Russia. Former graduates of the school and dancers of Perm Ballet, such as Galina Ragozina-Panova, Lyubov Kunakova, Galina Shlyapina, Nadezhda Pavlova, who went on to become a Prima Ballerina with the Bolshoi, and others, have confirmed the excellence of this schooling.
Nowadays, Perm artists like Elena Kulagina, Yulia Mashkina, Natalia Moiseeva, Vitaly Poleschuk, Radiy Miniakhmetov and others have distinguished themselves in national and international competitions and won international fame.
The Company tours extensively and recent tours included China, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Italy and the West coast of the U.S.
