The Opera company rehearses on Friday nights at Jack Hunt school, with breaks for Easter, Christmas and during August. Additional rehearsal time is required for chorus members as we near the major production and principal singers have their own separate rehearsal schedule.
In an average year we will perform one fully-staged opera (usually during the half-term break in October), one or two summer concerts, a Christmas Carol concert for the Key Theatre and an occasional evening entertainment. The concerts help to raise funds for the company and other charities.
As Peterborough Chorale we have competed in Sainsbury's Choir of the Year and other local competitive festivals.
We are always delighted to welcome new members, so if you have a yen to perform in opera or enjoy opportunities to sing varied, interesting and challenging music why not come along and give us a try! Prospective singers will be required to undertake a singing audition.
From the performance point of view Macbeth was a great success. We all enjoyed taking part and we had one of the strongest principal line-ups for a long time. However, the audiences failed to turn up (although those who did shared our enthusiasm for the opera) and so we lost even more money than usual. The committee have therefore decided that the production this year will be Carmen. This will be the fourth time we have performed this popular opera and we hope it will once again appeal to Peterborough audiences and enable us to keep going for a few more years.
Opera, even amateur opera is an expensive art form and the growing cost of theatre hire, orchestra and performing rights weigh heavily on a budget sustained only by subscriptions, ticket sales and the occasional grant. Our 2002 production, the splendid but little known "Hugh the Drover", failed to match artistic success (see the comments on our home page) with success at the box office and our finances took a severe blow. As a result we had to cut the production costs of our 2003 production of Sweeney Todd. For 2004 we are presenting Johann Strauss’ popular “Die Fledermaus.” As last year we shall have to perform without the benefit of a full orchestra to reduce our costs. We hope that this lively operetta will sell well and help us to build a more secure financial future. We always welcome support from the local community and business. We believe that Peterborough Opera contribute to and improve the cultural & artistic life in the City and that a wide choice of entertainment is important in attracting people to live and work in our area.
