Opera Recommendations for Beginners
Live opera is an exceptional experience.
This total art form embraces music, singing, drama and magnificent sets and costumes. With a full orchestra, a large chorus, actor-singers and occasionally dancers...the scale of the performance is unsurpassed. Opera illuminates and magnifies our world: a world of friendship, love, sacrifice, hatred, jealousy, sadness and ecstatic joy.
Intrigued? Choosing the first opera you want to see is easy. Decide first whether you feel like a passionate love story, a tense drama or a comedy. Would you prefer a modern production or a more traditional approach? Do you want to see a popular classic or something less well-known? How you start your opera journey will depend on your tastes in drama and music. Here are some descriptions that might help you choose which opera is best for you.
Of course, if you would like some help or advice in choosing your first opera, please contact our friendly customer service team in Melbourne on (03) 9685 3700 or Sydney (02) 9318 8200 and they will be happy to help.
We sought to tell this tale with clarity and with love, inspired by Puccini's core and his obvious love for his characters and their story." - Moffatt Oxenbould
East meets West and innocence meets experience, with tragic consequences, in Puccini's moving tale of love and loss in the ancient city of Nagasaki.
Cio-Cio-San is a delicate creature, willing and ready to love till death. Pinkerton, a lieutenant in the American navy on a Japanese tour of duty, is just as ready for love, but looks no further than his next posting. Their love burns brightly, but within a year he is gone, casting out empty promises to return. Other suitors will appear to take his place but Cio-Cio-San does not waver. In her heart she knows that one fine day Pinkerton will be back.
Moffatt Oxenbould's classic production, designed by Peter England and Russell Cohen, captures the grace and delicacy of Puccini's exquisite creation. Translucent bamboo screens, red silk and balletic graces define an imagined world for an all too real story, and the vivid colours are echoed by the tantalisingly evocative music and melting arias of this glorious romance.
Nicole Youl broke hearts in her Sydney debut as Cio-Cio-San. She now brings her moving interpretation of Madama Butterfly to Melbourne. She is joined by Sally-Anne Russell in the role of Suzuki and Rosario La Spina as the fickle Pinkerton. And to conduct, Opera Australia welcomes back Taiwanese conductor and Puccini-expert, Shao-Chia Lu.
Performed in Italian with surtitles.
Running time: two hours and thirty minutes including one twenty-minute interval.
