King Gustavus must choose between the loyal friendship of his trusted secretary, Anckarström, and his unrequited love for Anckarström’s beautiful wife, Amelia. Meanwhile, the winds of political intrigue swirl around the king, as talk of assassination mounts. Combined with the fortune teller Ulrica’s prediction that grave misfortune awaits Gustavus, the plot weaves these threads into the kind of drama that is found only in grand opera. This is another heroic work by Giuseppe Verdi, and one not to be missed on the DMMO stage.
Gaetano Donizetti wrote more than 70 operas during his lifetime, and among the most popular and enduring is The Elixir of Love. It tells the tale of the clever and beautiful Adina, her ardent admirer Nemorino, and the lengths to which he will go to win her heart. One of the great tenor arias in all of opera, ‘Una furtiva lagrima’ will captivate the listener this summer as it has for generations past. Enjoy this delightful story of romance, good fortune, and living happily ever after.
See how opera goes from the page to the stage at this unique event presented by The OPERAtors. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes peek into the rehearsal process, a backstage tour and insider’s notes from the production staff! Join us to celebrate the launch of DMMO’s 36th Festival Season with a wine reception. The event is free, but reservations are required.
DES MOINES METRO OPERA is one of the largest summer festivals featuring over 200 talented singers, musicians, coaches, conductors, and directors in three productions in repertory. Apprentice Artists will be in-residence from May 23 July 13, 2008 with mainstage performances beginning June 22.

Members of the James M. Collier Apprentice Artist Program are a diverse groupe of singers representing many ages and educational backgrounds.

* The average age of 2008’s program members is 26.
* Most have earned two degrees but a handful of the singers are in the final stages of an undergraduate degree.
* Thirty have completed or are currently working on their masters, and ten have or are working on their doctorates.
* For a few, this program is the first professional company or program but the overwhelming majority of our singers have previously been accepted to other important programs including those in Santa Fe, Utah, Central City, Lake George and St. Louis.

Audition Information for the OPERA Iowa Touring Troupe

During late summer and fall auditions, Des Moines Metro Opera will also hear singers to complete the casting needs for OPERA Iowa, its highly successful traveling education troupe. The total group consists of two sopranos, one tenor, one baritone, two bass-baritones, a music director/pianist and a scenic technician who rehearse for three weeks and then travel for ten weeks throughout Iowa and the surrounding states, performing in schools and on community concert series. All OPERA Iowa artists are offered positions with the Apprentice Artist Program for the summer of 2008.

The OPERA Iowa period of employment will run from January 4 - April 13, 2008. Compensation is competitive. Travel, housing and per diem while touring will be covered by Des Moines Metro Opera. Repertory will include fully staged productions of Donizetti's Don Pasquale for community and high school audiences and The Billy Goats Gruff for elementary audiences. Performances are sung in English and accompanied by piano.

OPERA Iowa Auditions are held in August in New York and also during the fall Apprentice Artist Program auditions. As much as we would like to hear everyone who submits audition materials, it is seldom possible because of time considerations. An accompanist is provided by DMMO for all live auditions.
Musicians come from all over the United States and Canada to play in the Des Moines Metro Opera Orchestra. Most perform during the year with professional orchestras that do not have a summer season. Many return year after year and are promoted through our tenure system. Informal chamber music concerts are voluntary and offer our orchestra players musical variety and the opportunity to get better acquainted with our colleagues.

Artistic Director and Conductor Dr. Robert Larsen founded Des Moines Metro Opera (DMMO) in 1973. The original goals of the company have changed little during those years: to provide a stage for young American singers, to showcase American repertoire not often heard in larger opera houses, and to recruit new friends of opera.

The DMMO Festival takes place on the campus of Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. Most members of the company will take up residence there for the duration of the season. Indianola is a community of 13,000 people located 15 miles south of Des Moines (metro population: 300,000). The college and small-town atmosphere of Indianola is friendly and relaxed, with ample opportunities for recreation, dining out, and shopping. All of the main stage operas will take place in the Blank Performing Arts Center Theater on the Simpson campus. The modern style, air-conditioned 500-seat theater has a combination thrust and proscenium layout with a relatively large orchestra pit. Air-conditioned dormitory housing (double occupancy) is provided free of charge by the Company. Single dormitory rooms and apartments are available on a limited basis at a very reasonable cost to the occupant(s).

Wages and conditions are governed by a union agreement with AFM Local 75 in Des Moines. Vacancies are generally announced by Novermber 1st and are filled through a recorded audition process. If you would like to send a resume, we will keep it on file and send you an audition packet if there is a vacancy for your instrument. All audition information, including excerpts and deadlines, are included in the audition packet. Vacancies are also published in International Musician. To request an audition packet or if you have other questions, please contact Chari Kruse by phone at (515) 961-6221, by fax at (515) 961-8175 or by e-mail at dmmo@dmmo.org.

The following positions are open on the Music/Directing staff for the 2009 OPERA Iowa tour and 2009 Summer Festival:

OPERA IOWA MUSICAL DIRECTOR & APPRENTICE MUSICAL COACH

Des Moines Metro Opera seeks a Musical Director for its 2009 Education Tour with OPERA Iowa. Dates of the engagement are from early January through mid-April 2009. Performances will include Rossini's The Barber of Seville and Patterson’s A Dream Fulfilled. Both productions are sung in English. Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: musical preparation and piano accompaniment for all productions, and participation in educational workshops. The ideal candidate will possess proven leadership abilities, the ability to make decisions under pressure, and demonstrate adaptability to scheduling changes, in addition to excellent coaching skills. DMMO provides a fee ($500/week), travel stipend for travel to and from Indianola and housing and per diem while on the tour.

Ideally, the musician selected for the Music Director position, would return to DMMO during the summer season of 2009 as the Apprentice Musical Coach. As a member of a talented staff of musical coaches and stage directors, the Apprentice Musical Coach contributes in the preparation of scene assignments within the Apprentice Artist Program for singers as well as assisting as a pianist on the mainstage rehearsals of the Summer Festival. This position provides significant professional experience and learning opportunities for talented young musicians.
