Opera company-
The COC produces seven fully staged opera productions and a series of 100 free concerts at the Four Seasons Centre. In addition, it presents operatic and orchestral concerts in venues throughout the city and collaborates with a number of arts organizations. In total, over 117,000 people attended COC mainstage performances, and the COC currently has more than 16,000 subscribers.

Fostering New Talent
The COC not only encourages the creation of new operatic works, it also fosters the training and development of young artists. The COC Ensemble Studio is Canada’s pre-eminent training program for young singers, directors and coaches. World recognized alumnae from this two to three year training program include Ben Heppner, Wendy Nielsen, Gidon Saks, John Fanning, and Isabel Bayrakdarian.

Our New Home
In 2006, the COC opened its new opera house in Toronto, the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. The traditional five-tiered, European horseshoe-shaped auditorium was specifically designed for opera with the highest level of acoustics and provides unparalleled intimacy between the audience and the stage. A large, flexible orchestra pit allows for the presentation of the full range of operatic repertoire, from chamber pieces by Mozart and Handel, to some of the monumental 19th- and 20th-century works. A glittering four-storey transparent Isadore and Rosalie Sharp City Room faces University Avenue, encouraging the public to experience the artistic life of the building through regular informal public recitals and performances.

The company’s inaugural production in the Four Seasons Centre was the first Canadian production of Wagner’s monumental Ring Cycle (Der Ring des Nibelungen). Three full cycles garnered enormous international acclaim from audiences and critics alike.

Richard Bradshaw 1944 – 2007
The passing of General Director Richard Bradshaw on Aug. 15, 2007 has left a great void, not only at the Canadian Opera Company, but in Canada and around the world. We dedicate the 2007/2008 season to his memory.
